The story behind the selection of the 24 pounder Carronade
This scale model kit was inspired by a scene in the movie, "Master and Commander" that really struck a chord with Zane and has stuck in his mind ... During the heat of battle, two ships get really close to each other and the young English gun commander swings his carronade down and blows the enemy away with a huge blast from what looked like 24 pounder carronades. This gun has impressive features and was definitely designed for close quarters combat!
It also makes for a fine model although this one is different in that I placed it on a garrison carriage instead of the more traditional naval carriage making the assembly much more fun.
Historical information
Designed and developed around 1777 at the Carron Company in Falkirk Scotland and test fired for the first time in 1778 the Carronade was to stamp its mark on history.
The effectiveness of the carronade was clearly demonstrated in 1779 during several engagements with French warships. In one particular incident, the Spitfire from Liverpool armed with 16 carronades attacked a frigate 4x it's burthern (which is an ancient way of saying burden) and caused the French ship to strike its colours (to lower its flag as a sign of surrender).
At close ranges the carronade was a very effective anti-personnel weapon, firing grape shot to sweep the decks of the opponent. The model you have is a carronade on a garrison carriage. These would have been used to protect the fortress walls and ramparts and were called “Caponiers†which is the word for a covered entrance to a fortress from which these guns could be used to fire down the length the wall.
Carronades became obsolete once their limitation was understood by their opponents, who only had to stay out of range of a carronade armed vessel and shoot it to pieces using long guns.
About the model
The 24 Pounder Carronade kit consists of 17 pieces (8 zinc, 8 brass, 1 resin) which require simple assembling. For those good at solving puzzles, we're sure that you won't have any trouble figuring out how to assemble it yourself. Even the youngest gunners will be able to assemble it without requiring specialized equipment, just a few nimble fingers and maybe a little help from Dad.
For those who get stuck or prefer to follow rules, we have included a step-by-step instruction leaflet for quick and easy assembly. We believe you will enjoy assembling this piece as much as we have enjoyed developing it.
